Out of Milliways: the magic's in the music
Jan. 8th, 2006 09:15 pm"This is ridiculous, Crash."
"What, just because I still have faith?"
"You've got to be the only person in the whole bloody city. Everybody else... I don't know, gave up, or forgot about it, or something. Why can't you just let it go?"
"Because... because. I think if we just give it one more chance, we might actually get the sound right."
"That's what you said the last three dozen times."
"Please?"
"Oh, all right, but if it doesn't work, give up. Everybody'll be happier, probably starting with the horses."
It's the racket coming from the carriage house that gives Imp pause, but it's the odd coherence to the noise that holds his attention.
I listened and I heard music in a word
And words when you played your guitar
He knows that. He doesn't know why, but he definitely knows that. And it scares him, more than a little.
The note that began all can also destroy
At the same time, though, he's not sure what these kids think they're doing. He could almost certainly do better than that--
But that's not what he wants, anymore. He wants to make it on his own terms, and as much as he doesn't have the first clue what this stuff is, he knows (remembers?) it's definitely not his own terms.
The noise that I was hearing was a million people cheering
As a child flew past me, riding in a star
Trouble is, these terms are so very tempting...
He's not sure he can fight it off if he stays here. But then something occurs to him, and he's off to find that bar as fast as his feet can carry him.
"...What was that?"
"I think that's what you were after, Crash."
"That was amazing!"
"Let's never do that again, all right? It didn't feel right."
"Are you kidding? It was kind of... cool." The word's rusty in this usage, but Crash can't think of anything else that would work.
"...If you want to keep chasing after it, have fun."
